Newcastle United could turn their attention to Brentford striker Ivan Toney as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new Premier League season.

Following the collapse of a deal to sign Reims prospect Hugo Ekitike and subsuquent loan move to Paris Saint Germain, the Magpies recruitment staff are considering a number of other options in the transfer market.

Moves for Leeds United winger Jack Harrison and Real Sociedad star Alexander Isak have been widely reported but speculation over the weekend has suggested a move for one former Magpie could be in the offing.

The Sun have stated Newcastle are ready to make a £30million move to bring Toney back to Tyneside four years after his first spell on Tyneside.

After joining the Magpies from Northampton Town in the summer of 2015, Toney went on to make just four senior appearances before departing to Peterborough United in a £650,000 deal three years later.

The powerful frontman found his feet at London Road by scoring 49 goals in 94 appearances for The Posh to earn a £5million move to Brentford.

The striker reflected on his time at St James Park ahead of his move to Brentford and admitted his departure from Tyneside was ‘a blessing in disguise’.

“When he came in I was injured at the time and he (Rafa Benitez) put the injured lads at the bottom end so it was kind of tough to take,” Toney told Sky Sports in 2020.

“Rafa is a great manager but personally I don’t think I was given that chance. That’s my opinion on it, others may feel different.

“It’s a game of opinions, if one manager doesn’t want you it doesn’t mean another doesn’t.

“It’s a blessing in disguise, I’ve come to Peterborough and found my feet again and doing well for myself.”

Newcastle are now said to be considering a move to bring Toney back to Tyneside but will face competition from Premier League rivals Leeds United and Everton.

The report states Toney still has three years left on his current contract but an offer of £30million could be ‘too tempting’ for the Bees.
