Rennes have rebuffed a £17million bid from Bayer Leverkusen for rumoured Newcastle United target Desire Doue, according to reports.

Viewed as one of European football’s top talents, the Frenchman has attracted interest from several continental heavyweights. Real Madrid scouts were understood to have watched him in October with Los Blancos chiefs bankrolling a youthful renaissance at the Bernabeu.

Doue broke into the Rennes team last season and, despite being 18, is already representing France at under-21 level. He was the first professional debutant to have been born in 2005 and his Europa League goal against Dynamo Kyiv earlier this season made him the youngest Frenchman to score in UEFA competition.

Newcastle were named as a potential destination by L’Equipe a fortnight ago as Toon chiefs aim to bolster their youth ranks. Dan Ashworth has made the academy a top priority since his appointment as sporting director.

Youngsters like Garang Kuol and Yankuba Minteh have arrived, with emerging talent important for the first team as well as creating Financial Fair Play headroom further down the line. Fresh claims have emerged suggesting Leverkusen are the first club to see a move for Doue rejected.

Die Werkself are European football’s surprise package this season as they close in on a first Bundesliga title. Xabi Alonso’s men are unbeaten after 19 games - sitting two points ahead of dominant force Bayern Munich.

An update from L’Equipe has revealed Leverkusen have failed with a £17million bid for Doue. Rennes have the player, who can play as a number 10 or out wide, tied down until 2026 so they are in no desperation to sell.
