Newcastle United transfer target Sven Botman couldn’t help but smile when asked about the possibility of joining AC Milan this summer.

The Magpies are battling the Serie A champions for the Lille central defender having been handed fresh hope of securing his signature.

Botman was expected to be a Milan player by now but the delay has seen the Magpies return to the table after failing to sign him in January.

However, in the 22-year-old’s latest interview about his future, United may well feel discouraged after the Netherlands international smirked when asked about Milan’s interest.

Sven Botman’s telling smirk

“We are working on it (on a summer move),” he told ESPN, as translated from Dutch.

“It’s difficult for me to get away from things at the moment. It’s an important moment for me, so I hear something about this situation almost every day.

“Things are progressing and I hope there will be more clarity before the pre-season training camp starts.”

When asked whether it is AC Milan, Botman smiled before the interview came to an end.

Sven Botman confirmed Newcastle’s interest last week

Botman’s latest comments come after he confirmed last week that Milan and Newcastle were interested in signing him ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

He told Algemeen Dagblad: “Those clubs are interested, yes. I can’t and won’t say much more about it.

“What I want? Taking a nice step towards a nice competition. I am also looking forward to a new step.

“I am aware of what I want. That is not necessarily to that club or that competition. You weigh all kinds of things and then the total picture has to suit you. I must have a very good feeling about it.”
