Newcastle United supporters have eagerly anticipated the January transfer window ever since the prolonged takeover of the club was completed three months ago.

The Magpies have been linked with all kinds of weird and wonderful names since the consortium containing the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports and Media took control at St James Park.

After witnessing years of limited expectation and ambition at St James Park, the United faithful were suddenly allowed to dream of the possibility of high-profile signings and genuine progress on and off the pitch.

Closing Time

An exciting month finally got underway when the window officially opened at the weekend and will remain open until 11pm on Monday, 31st January.

Clubs can officially complete deals after the closure of the window provided a ‘deal sheet’ is submitted to the Premier League prior to 11pm on the last day of the month.

The deal sheet will provide the governing body with confirmation an agreement has been reached between the two clubs and the player.

It will allow the buying club additional time to submit any remaining documentation.

Deal sheets are not able to be used before 9pm on deadline day - but once used, they give the buying club an additional two hours to complete the transfer.

Confusingly, if the buying club are signing a player from abroad, they still have to comply with the FIFA Transfer Matching System (TMS) deadline of midnight according to the Premier League website.

Newcastle are the ones to watch

Newcastle are expected to be the ones to watch over the next four weeks as they look to make use of their new found wealth.

England star Kieran Trippier is on the brink of becoming the Magpies first addition of the window after United agreed a fee of around £12m with Spanish champions Atletico Madrid.

The wing-back should undergo a medical on Tyneside on Wednesday and is expected to become the highest earner at St James Park.

Progress is being made on other deals as the Magpies hierarchy look to boost Eddie Howe’s squad in a bid to maintain their Premier League status.

Despite talk in France suggesting Lille are resisting bids for Dutch defender Sven Botman, the powerful centre-back remains very much on United’s radar.

Speculation over a move for Everton left-back Lucas Digne continues to gather pace and a midfielder and at least one striker is expected to arrive before the end of the month.

A hectic month expected for relegation rivals

Newcastle are not the only club expecting to be busy in the transfer market in order to boost their chances of staying in the Premier League.

Burnley currently sit level on points with Eddie Howe’s side after winning just one of their 17 league games so far this season.

Speculation over possible incomings at Turf Moor has been surprisingly quiet - although a loan move for Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley has been mentioned.

Highly-rated winger Dwight McNeill is believed to be attracting attention from Everton and Aston Villa and defensive duo Ben Mee and James Tarkowski have also been linked with a move away.

Watford sit one place and two points outside of the relegation zone and they are set to back current manager Claudio Ranieri in order to extend their stay in the top flight.

Ivory Coast international left-back Hassane Kamara has already joined the Hornets and a number of other defensive additions have been mentioned in the press with Arsenal’s Sead Kolasinac and Aston Villa’s Kortney Hause linked with a move to Vicarage Road.

Leeds United are set to get their spending with the signing of young striker Mateo Joseph from La Liga club Espanyol and former United boss Rafa Benitez has already added full-backs Vitaliy Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson to his under-performing Everton squad.

Quality not quantity for clubs at the right end of the Premier League

Somewhat unsurprisingly, Premier League leaders Manchester City are not expected to be busy over the coming weeks.

Pep Guardiola’s side look to be cantering towards a second successive title and the City boss is looked to prune his squad, rather than add to it.

Spanish forward Ferran Torres has joined Barcelona and it seems any major incomings - including a new striker - will wait until the summer.

Finding a replacement for injured left-back Ben Chilwell will be the focus for Chelsea and it seems the Blues could provide Newcastle with competition for Everton’s Lucas Digne.

Thomas Tuchel has also shown an interest in Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde - although that move could be another that is more likely to take place at the end of the season.

Liverpool have been quiet in the January window ever since Jurgen Klopp took charge at Anfield and it seems the Reds will follow a similar pattern over the next month.

Strengthening a questionable defence will be the priority for Manchester United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick - although speculation continues over the future of Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial.

A centre-back and a winger are on Antonio Conte’s shopping list at Spurs and a number of fringe players are expected to depart as the Italian looks to put his own stamp on the squad.

One of the few negatives of Arsenal’s promising season has been the situation surrounding now-former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The former Borussia Dortmund forward was stripped of the captaincy over a “disciplinary breach” and is one player that could leave the Emirates in the near future.
