The January transfer window is open for business and Newcastle United are reportedly hoping to add at least two new faces to their squad over the next month.

The Magpies squad has been decimated by injuries in recent months with the likes of Joe Willock, Nick Pope and Harvey Barnes all spending significant periods on the sidelines. Despite their injury crisis showing some signs of receding over the coming weeks, there is still a desire to strengthen Eddie Howe's squad as the United manager aims to move on from a desperately disappointing December and Monday's poor performance in their defeat at Liverpool.

A midfielder is said to be a priority and a versatile forward is also believed to be on the agenda after the news Callum Wilson has suffered another injury that will rule him out of action for the next fortnight. Despite Martin Dubravka's man of the match display in Monday's defeat at Anfield, a goalkeeper is being considered.

With the January transfer window now underway, NewcastleWorld takes a look at the latest speculation including claims made over Ivan Toney, Kalvin Phillips and a Brazilian midfielder linked with Newcastle over the last six months.

Peterborough chairman rubbishes Magpies sell-on claim

Newcastle United DO have a sell-on clause on Ivan Toney - but not at the level suggested in some sections of the media.

That was the response from Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony as he replied to speculation the Magpies could be in line for a significant windfall should the England striker secure a move away from Brentford over the coming weeks.

The Magpies sold Toney to Peterborough for less than £1m in 2018 after the former Northampton Town forward struggled to make a significant impact at St James Park. After forging a reputation as a deadly finisher with the Posh, Toney moved on to Brentford for a £10m in 2020 and he helped the Bees to a first ever promotion into the Premier League before impressing in his first seasons in the elite.

With Arsenal and Chelsea said to be interested in Toney, Sky Sports News have claimed Peterborough have a 30% sell-on clause in their agreement with Brentford and stated Newcastle will receive 30% of that fee. However, MacAnthony rubbished those claims and revealed the report had him 'double-checking' the contract.

Speaking via his X (formerly Twitter) account, he said: "Complete misinformation. That even had me double-checking the contract just now and the sell-on clause. "Nobody pays £10million for a L1 signing & pays 30% sell on…nobody."

United 'enquiry' for former midfield target

Newcastle have reportedly submitted an enquiry with Premier League rivals Chelsea over a possible deal for midfielder Andrey Santos.

The once-capped Brazil international was the subject of interest from the Magpies prior to his summer move to Stamford Bridge after he was watched by United recruitment staff on several occasions. His first experience of the Premier League came with a loan move to Nottingham Forest but Santos made just three appearances for the City Ground club and has now been recalled by Chelsea.

However, Premier League rules mean any possible loan move to St James Park would depend on Newcastle converting Lewis Hall's loan deal into a permanent switch during the January transfer window.

Phillips loan move in the balance

Newcastle's potential move for Manchester City and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips is said to be 'on a knife edge'.

iNews have reported the Magpies have held 'preliminary dialogue' with the reigning Premier League champions over a deal to take the former Leeds United star on loan for the remainder of the season and hand him regular first-team football in a bid to secure a place in England's Euro 2024 Finals squad.

However, City are also said to be demanding a loan fee in excess of £5m and would like an obligation to convert the loan deal into a permanent switch entered into any agreement. Fulham and Crystal Palace are also said to be monitoring the situation as Newcastle consider their options.
