Three Newcastle United players are walking a disciplinary tightrope heading into Sunday’s Premier League clash away to Nottingham Forest.

Joelinton, Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are one yellow card away from serving a one-match league ban having been cautioned four times in the Magpies’ opening 10 fixtures.

Joelinton picked up his fourth booking of the campaign during the 1-1 draw against Manchester City last month while Burn received his in recent 1-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. Schar, meanwhile, joined the pair on the same number after being booked during United’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal at the weekend.

Premier League rules state that any player shown five bookings in the opening 19 league matches is suspended for one match, something which impacted Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordonand Kieran Trippier last season.

That means the trio must make it to matchday 20 - the visit to Tottenham Hotspur on January 2, 2025 - if they are to avoid punishment.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hall and Sandro Tonali are also close to the threshold having been booked three times this season. Bruno Guimaraes and Sean Longstaff sit on two yellows, while Lloyd Kelly, Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock and Nick Pope are on one.

After the 19-game mark, the the threshold changes to 10 bookings, 32 games and a two-match ban.

Any player shown 15 bookings over the course of the season is handed a three-match ban but no player has ever been cautioned that many times during a single Premier League campaign.
