Luke Shaw will have a similar impact to Kieran Trippier if Newcastle United decide to make a move for the Manchester United defender.

That was the verdict of former Leeds United and Middlesbrough star Noel Whelan as he assessed the England defender’s future.

It is just over eight years since the former Southampton left-back joined the 13-time Premier League champions in a £30m deal and he has gone on to experience rather mixed fortunes during his time at Old Trafford.  Shaw has made over 220 appearances for the Red Devils and helped them win the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017.

The summer arrival of Dutch international Tyrell Malacia has limited the defender to just four starts in all competitions in what could be a pivotal season for Shaw as he enters the final year of his current deal.  Negotiations over a new deal have yet to reach a successful conclusion and there have been suggestions the full-back could be allowed to depart on a cut-price deal in January.

Newcastle have been linked with a surprise move to add Shaw to their squad and Whelan believes the 27-year-old would be an ‘invaluable’ addition for Eddie Howe’s side.

He told Football Insider: “It’s one of the positions that Erik ten Hag is pondering over. He’s thinking about possibly signing another full-back, he doesn’t know who the best option is.

“I think with the way they did it with Trippier, bringing in that experience and quality – they’ll be happy to repeat that success. It’s down to the manager as well.

“I think if you get him playing under Eddie Howe, he’d become a better player. It’d be exciting, it makes sense – and having that kind of experience is invaluable for a club like Newcastle.”

Shaw started for the Red Devils in Sunday’s Premier League clash against the Magpies.
