Newcastle United v Burnley early team news as £63m duo among nine ruled out

Newcastle United host newly-promoted Burnley at St James’ Park hoping to record a third successive Premier League victory.

Newcastle United team news

Eddie Howe will make late decisions on Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson and Sven Botman.

Isak started and scored during the midweek win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup but withdrew because of a tight calf. Wilson (hamstring) and Botman (knee) missed out altogether and Howe has confirmed the trio will be assessed ahead of kick-off.

“Alexander Isak is another one who we’ll have to make a late check on. That’s the cost of three games that we had last week. It’s usually the third game where these games build up and that’s where we are.”

Meanwhile, Howe expects to have Dan Burn back from illness after he missed the City clash. Bruno Guimaraes twisted his ankle on Wednesday but is set to feature.

Newcastle remain without Joe Willock with an Achilles problem, while Howe revealed summer signing Harvey Barnes will be out until 2024.

“We think he’s going to be out for around three months,” said Howe. “No surgery required which is good news but his foot is now in a boot. It’s an injury underneath his toe and he’s now starting his recovery.

“I think he’s going to be quite sedated for a period of time because he’s got to rest and give it every chance to recover and then we have to build him up slowly.”

Burnley team news

Manuel Benson is among the Burnley players expected to miss the trip to St James; Park.

The 26-year-old suffered ankle swelling which forced him off midway through the first-half of Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup win at Salford City.

The injury isn’t as bad as first feared according to Vincent Kompany, but he’s still likely to be absent for the next few weeks.

“It’s not bad, bad news but in the short term it has an impact on the squad for the weekend,” the Belgian said.

Kompany will hope to have Benson back available to him for the trip to Brentford after the international break on Saturday, October 21. That is also the case for former Southampton winger. Nathan Redmond

“He’s making good progress,” Kompany said. “Again, hopefully after the international break there will be a few players back by then.”

Lyle Foster serves the third and final game of his three-match ban, while Hjalmar Ekdal (knee), Darko Churlinov (health scare) and Michael Obafemi (hamstring) all remain sidelined.
