Newcastle United host Crystal Palace at St James’ Park for the second time this season as Eddie Howe’s side bid to book their place in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.

The two clubs met in the Premier League in September and played out a goalless draw after Joe Willock’s goal was controversially ruled out for a collision with Vicente Guaita.

Club-record signing Alexander Isak also squandered a golden one-on-one opportunity - but the Sweden international won’t feature this time around, with Isak one of four United players ruled out of the cup clash.

The 22-year-old is recovering from a thigh injury sustained in the most recent international break and won’t return until after the World Cup break following a setback.

“He’s in the early stages of his injury now,” Howe said last week. “He’s had two injections, I believe, into the thigh. I think he was given around a five-week diagnosis but these things can change with muscle injuries.

“We’re taking it slowly with him because there is no need to rush him initially, giving him a little bit more time to recover. We hope when we start training again he’ll join in with the group.”

Emil Krafth played in the previous round - a 2-1 win at Tranmere Rovers - but suffered an ACL injury midway through the first half. The right-back has been back at the training ground this week after spending some time in his homeland Sweden but won’t until March at the earliest.

Both Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett have been ruled out with a calf injury and are yet to be given a return date.

In the Palace camp, Patrick Vieira is without James McArthur and Chris Richards. McArthur hasn’t kicked a ball since pre-season after injuring his groin, while Richards, a summer signing from Bayern Munich, has been sidelined with a hamstring problem.

“Chris has started doing some work outside but he didn’t do any kind of training with the team yet” Vieira said recently. What is important is about him physically, there is a step he has to go through and at the moment he hasn’t done any kind of training with the squad.”

Richards, a USA international, is in a race to be fit for the World Cup. Vieira added: “So the decision is not going to be mine but with the doctor we have to decide as a club what is best for the club.”

Meanwhile, Odsonne Edouard is a doubt after the striker missed Palace’s dramatic 2-1 win at West Ham United.
