Sandro Tonali could miss Newcastle’s game against Brentford as he battles to return for Champions League opener at Milan

Newcastle United are hoping to get back to winning ways when they host Brentford in a crucial Premier League encounter.

The Magpies are currently on a poor run of form which has seen them lose all of their last three games to strong opponents in Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton.

Brentford are unbeaten in the Premier League with three draws and one victory. Thomas Frank’s side will hope to build on last season’s successful season and compete for a place in Europe next term.

The game comes just three days before Newcastle’s Champions League opener against AC Milan in a game which could see Sandro Tonali make his return to the San Siro.

However, the midfielder is a doubt for the game against Brentford and he was ruled out of Italy’s 2-1 victory against Ukraine with a slight muscle injury.

Elliot Anderson is another doubt for Brentford. The midfielder was forced to withdraw from international duty last week and he was sent home from Steve Clarke’s Scotland side with an unspecified injury.

Midfield is quickly becoming an area of concern for Eddie Howe and his team who will definitely be without Joe Willock who is still absent with a long term achilles injury.

Newcastle are hoping for an improved defensive performance after a series of individual errors in their 3-1 loss to Brighton and they could be boosted by the return of Sven Botman who has been seen training with the squad ahead of the game.

Another returning player could be long term absentee Emil Krath who was also seen training ahead of the Brentford game. The Swedish international played just one Premier League game last season but was crucial to Newcastle’s survival in the 2021/22 campaign in the absence of Kieran Trippier.

Brentford will be without midfielder Josh DaSilva who is currently recovering from a severe thigh problem, while the Bees are also missing Shandon Baptiste who has a dislocated shoulder.

Midfielder Mikkel Damsgaard sat out Denmark’s international fixtures with injury but he is expected to return to the matchday squad for the trip to St James’ Park.

Ex-Everton forward Neal Maupay may make his second debut for Brentford as he fills in for long term absentee Ivan Toney who is banned until January 2024.
