Newcastle United skipper Bruno Guimaraes scored on Sunday - and his wife took to social media to celebrate it.

Apart from Dan Burn, and match-winner Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes was probably the man of the moment for Newcastle United after their Carabao Cup win. While Isak was the man who took the honours of sealing the silverware, and Burn the headlines for his heading exploits and England duty after, it was Guimaraes who lifted the trophy aloft, the first Magpies’ captain to do domestically since 1955.

And it’s fair to say Guimaraes did his best to steal the show when the city and its people came out to mark the occasion on the Town Moor and the streets of Newcastle. The daft lad from Rio, despite being told to keep it clean, couldn’t help himself dropping some F bombs, live on TV across the world. And, it’s fair to say, we all loved him for it!

For his words and his actions, Bruno has cemented himself not only in the hearts and minds of everyone who has black and white running through their veins, but also within the club’s history - as he vowed to do when he arrived from Lyon. And while it’s all plain sailing when it comes to relationships with fans of Newcastle, it’s not always that straightforward for Guimaraes.

Along with countryman and big friend Joelinton, he has, at times, bore the brunt of criticism from Brazil fans during the country’s international failings. Guimaraes, of course, is not to blame for Brazil’s struggles, but he has been given some poor write ups in the media and subject to some scapegoating by fans, who often point to the Premier League, similarly with Joelinton, as a place that irons the ‘Brazilian’ out of the player.

And, it appears, Guimaraes’ wife, Ana Lidia Martins, fresh from a trip back to her homeland, has fired back at such critics on social media. I mean, we don’t definitely know that’s where it was aimed at, but one thing is for certain, he is very, very short of critics in Newcastle.

Taking to her Instagram she posted a two-word message to her story which accompanied a TNT Sports Football account image of Guimaraes kissing the NUFC badge, highlighting how he had won the most duels this season, among a whole host of other impressive league-leading stats. It simply read: “Fala Baixo”. And with it were three ‘shush’ emojis. Translated into English it reads: “Speak quietly.”

Newcastle United Europe: What competition will the Magpies be in?

Guimaraes skippered Newcastle to their first top flight double over Manchester United in nearly 100 years with the 4-1 victory on Sunday. Gumaraes netted the fourth after a Harvey Barnes double and a Sandro Tonali volley had put them well on the way to another vital three points.

Newcastle are on the verge of making an historic season, truly remarkable, by chasing down a Champions League return. United are already qualified for Europe due to their Carabao Cup victory - they enter the play-off round of the UEFA Conference League as a cherry on the top in ending their silverware drought. But they are hoping for a top five finish, that would see them jump back into Europe’s premier club competition after missing out altogether last year. A likely consolation prize for finishing sixth or seventh will be a spot in the Europa League.
