Eddie Howe has a big selection call to make ahead of facing Arsenal on whether or not to start both Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier.

The England pair returned from their respective injuries last weekend - playing the final 25 minutes of Newcastle United’s 5-0 loss to Manchester City.

Wilson, on his first appearance since December, looked sharp when introduced and could - and perhaps should - have found the net when he went one-v-one with Ederson.

Trippier, meanwhile, was playing for the first time since fracturing the fifth metatarsal in his left foot against Aston Villa in February.

Howe admits both players are keen to start United’s final home game of the season but the Magpies head coach is taking a cautious approach.

“I think both players would say they are very keen to start,” Howe told reporters. “My job is to make sure I’m doing the best, not just for the individual, but also for the team as well.

“We have to make sure that they’re fit enough and physically good enough to last a long period in the game, because obviously I don’t want to be making too many changes too early in the match, which would unbalance the team.

“They’re also slightly different – you can’t group them together and say they’re at the same stage. Callum has done more training work than Kieran, although of course he sustained a more serious injury.

“We’ll make a decision based on the training week this week as to whether they’re ready to start the game on Monday.”
