Newcastle United Women player ratings from 2-1 Sunderland win: 9/10 'hero' & 'commanding' 8/10

Newcastle United Women claimed local bragging rights with a 2-1 win against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Beth Lumsden netted in both halves before a goal by Emily Scarr put the Lady Magpies under pressure for the remaining quarter of an hour. However, Becky Langley’s side managed to see out the victory to move up to sixth in the Women’s Championship table.

Newcastle headed into the match looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season against North East rivals Durham Women at Kingston Park last weekend.

Head coach Becky Langley made four changes with Isabella Sibley, Charlotte Potts, Olivia Watt and Lumsden coming in for Lois Joel, Deanna Cooper, Sophie Haywood and Amy Andrews.

Lumsden gave the Lady Magpies the lead in the 28th minute when she cut inside on the left to fire the ball past Demi Lambourne. Lumsden then added a second immediately after half-time when her in-swinging corner found its way into the top right corner.

That was the former Portsmouth forward’s second and third goals of the campaign after scoring in the recent 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

Langley’s side looked relatively comfortable with their 2-0 lead but Scarr’s goal made it a tense remaining quarter of an hour.

Demi Stokes missed a fantastic opportunity from close range to make it 3-1 but thankfully for her, and Newcastle, that didn’t come back to haunt the visitors, who held on for three points.
