Newcastle United Women moved to within one point of league leaders Durham Cestria as they cruised to a 4-0 victory at home to Norton & Stockton.

Lady Magpies boss Becky Langley will have been keen to put on a show in the penultimate home game of the season, with the final one being at St James’ Park.

And the Lasses got off to a dream start as Rachel Lee converted from the spot just 33 seconds in after Kacie Elson was bundled to the ground.

Newcastle continued to pepper the Norton goal late into the second half, but it was almost an own goal that doubled their lead as Georgia Rae sliced Erin Nelson’s cross into the hands of Kelsie Moore.

It took until the second half for Newcastle to double their lead as Katie Barker’s strike took a lot of belief out of the Norton players.

Despite United’s dominance, Langley would have wanted her side to kill off the game. This is something they did not long when Kacie Elson scored one of the goals of the season.

Georgia Gibson played a delightful ball to Elson who was chopped by one defender before twisting her way past another Norton player, which allowed her to crash an effort into the roof of the net.

Not to be outdone, top scorer Gibson got in on the act. She cut in from the left-hand side of the box before taking aim and firing an arrowed effort into the bottom corner.

Langley will have been delighted to see such a complete performance from her side after putting so much emotion into their midweek bout against Cestria just a few days earlier.

The Lady Magpies have five games remaining in their quest for promotion, and hold a game in hand over Durham.
