Newcastle United’s confirmed starting line-up v Southampton: Eddie Howe makes bold call
Newcastle United’s starting line-up to face Southampton in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final has been confirmed.
Newcastle United are unchanged from the goalless draw at Crystal Palace for tonight’s Carabao Cup semi-final clash at Southampton (kick-off 8pm).
Eddie Howe has named the same starting line-up for the fourth match in a row as the Magpies eye a positive result to take to St James’ Park for the second half a week today.
This is United’s first League Cup semi-final since 1976, and their first in all competitions in 18 years. Howe, however, is desperate to go one step further.
“Yeah, we’re delighted to be where were are but the semi-final itself isn’t enough,” Howe said during his pre-match press conference. “I don’t think it’s enough for anybody.
“To say you got to a semi-final means nothing. You want to get one step further. I know the players feel the same way.
“Me and my coaching team feel passionate about it, that we want to make the final but we have to navigate these two games and hey are going to be very difficult.”

5. LB: Dan Burn
Memorably scored in United’s quarter-final win against Leicester City. Can he repeat his heroics?

6. CM: Bruno Guimaraes
Guimaraes made a miraculous six day recovery from an ankle injury to start against Palace. Thankfully, he came through unscathed.

7. CM: Sean Longstaff
Longstaff doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his relentless work out of possession. Needs a goal to silence his critics.

8. CM: Joe Willock
Willock’s pace and ability to break lines causes teams serious problems. His final product, however, does let him down at times.
