In the last few days, the Magpies have let academy midfielder Jamie Miley join National League side Hartlepool United on a permanent basis and bid an emotional farewell to Miguel Almiron, who has returned to former club Atlanta United.
Newcastle are understood to have recouped around £10million for Almiron, six years after he arrived for a then club-record £21m. Head coach Eddie Howe didn’t necessarily want to lose the Paraguayan but recognised that a sale made financial sense for the club.
Because that’s what Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) do, it forces clubs - those that aren’t part of the ‘big six’ anyway - to apply business logic over football logic.
And the word we’re getting back is that by not spending in the January transfer window - no matter how frustrating that is for supporters - will put Newcastle in a much stronger position this summer.
How the summer plays out exactly, well we’ll have to wait and see on that front. But just for a bit of fun, we look at how Newcastle could line-up for the 2025-26 campaign - based on the players they’ve been linked with signing.
