In the last few days, the Magpies have let academy midfielder Jamie Miley join National League side Hartlepool United on a permanent basis and bid an emotional farewell to Miguel Almiron, who has returned to former club Atlanta United.
Newcastle are understood to have recouped around £10million for Almiron, six years after he arrived for a then club-record £21m. Head coach Eddie Howe didn’t necessarily want to lose the Paraguayan but recognised that a sale made financial sense for the club.
Because that’s what Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) do, it forces clubs - those that aren’t part of the ‘big six’ anyway - to apply business logic over football logic.
And the word we’re getting back is that by not spending in the January transfer window - no matter how frustrating that is for supporters - will put Newcastle in a much stronger position this summer.
How the summer plays out exactly, well we’ll have to wait and see on that front. But just for a bit of fun, we look at how Newcastle could line-up for the 2025-26 campaign - based on the players they’ve been linked with signing.

9. RW: Bryan Mbeumo
Only Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland scored more goals than Mbeumo in the Premier League last season. As someone who can play RW or ST, the Cameroonian would be the perfect signing. | Getty Images

10. LW: Anthony Gordon
Having recently signed a new long-term contract, Gordon is set to be a key part of Newcastle and England’s attack for years to come. | Getty Images

11. ST: Alexander Isak
Speculation will no doubt surround the Swede's future this summer but the top and bottom line is, he is NOT for sale. | Getty Images
