Newcastle United’s pre-season plans revealed as Magpies reschedule cancelled US tour

Newcastle United are lining up two summer friendlies as part of a hastily arranged European pre-season trip.

The Magpies were set to jet off to America this summer to lock horns with the likes of Valencia, Villarreal and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Ohio Cup.

However, event organisers put an end to those plans when the tournament was called off in May.

That left Eddie Howe will huge hole in his meticulously planned summer schedule.

And that hole looks set to be filled with a trip to the Austrian Alps for a warm weather training camp in early July.

As part of the trip United are looking at the prospect of arranging two friendlies, although at this stage it is unclear whether those games will be behind closed doors or open to the public.

So far United have announced three stellar summer fixtures with a St James’ Park double-header and a trip to Portugal already on the menu.

United face Benfica in Lisbon for the chance to lift the Eusebio Cup on Tuesday, July 26 before rounding off their pre-season with two games in two days the weekend after.

First up on Friday, July 29 is Atalanta. Then the visitors to St James’ Park on Saturday, July 30 will be Athletico Bilbao.

Newcastle’s first game of the Premier League season will take place on Saturday, August 6 against newly-promoted Nottingham Forest.
