Newcastle United's £163m triple fitness 'concern' ahead of Brentford & Kieran Trippier update

Eddie Howe has revealed Newcastle United had some tired bodies in their squad following the 3-3 draw with Liverpool.

The Magpies played out a Premier League classic with the Reds at St James’ Park, twice taking the lead through Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon before Mohammed Salah’s double flipped the game on its head.

United, however, fought back in the 90th minute as Fabian Schar claimed a point. The physical effort against the division’s leaders took its toll on some players as Howe weighs up potential changes ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brentford.

“It is something we’re going to discuss at length today and try and find the right balance between change and consistency of selection,” Howe admitted.

“I think there are a few things to know that they were some tired bodies in the team. After the game, Sandro was getting cramp with about 10-15 minutes to go, Anthony Gordon was fatigued at the end of his performance which has very good. Naturally when you empty like that and give so much to the game there is going to be a hit.

“Alex worked extremely hard and has tired too so our job is to refuel, regroup and go again ahead of what is another great opportunity for us.”

Meanwhile, Kieran Trippier remains a doubt after missing the Liverpool game through illness. Providing an update, Howe said: “He’s improving. We’ll see today [if he can be available for Brentford].”
