Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon will be walking Premier League tightropes when they take on Luton Town today.

The former received his ninth yellow card of the campaign in Newcastle United’s previous home fixture against Manchester City. Guimaraes racked up five bookings in a hurry earlier this season which saw him miss the 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth.

His aggression and passionate style has resulted in him becoming a fans’ favourite on Tyneside but also means he is always playing on the edge of a possible suspension. Last year, Guimaraes came within one game of missing the Carabao Cup final after he was shown a straight red in the semi-final win over Southampton.

The 26-year-old is already one card away from picking up a two-game ban, with the 10-booking rule not resetting until matchday 32. Newcastle’s talisman has walked on thin ice since fouling Mateo Kovacic during the City defeat last month.

As for Gordon, he took just seven games to pick up a one-match suspension, missing the 2-2 draw with West Ham United in October. The former Everton winger has picked up three yellow cards since - putting him two away from another ban.

Gordon has improved his discipline but did go into referee John Brooks’ book for fouling Jacob Ramsey in the 3-1 win over Aston Villa. Eddie Howe recently opened up about needing to avoid reckless cautions given Newcastle’s injury situation.

“The last thing we need, to be honest, is to lose anyone through suspension,” he said. “But we will have to cross that bridge when it comes.”

Elsewhere in the squad, Kieran Trippier, Sean Longstaff and Joelinton have accumulated five yellow cards. Jamaal Lascelles has four but another will not be punished with a suspension as it would be after the 19th game. Fabian Schar has three, Dan Burn and Sandro Tonali two, while 10 Newcastle players have one caution to their name.
