Just 48 hours after the conclusion of the 2022 Fifa World Cup, Newcastle are back in action. Eddie Howe’s side will welcome Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup, squaring off against his old side.
Howe left Bournemouth following their relegation to the Championship in 2020. He took them from the depths of League Two to the Premier League in an astonishing run spanning almost a decade.

The Cherries head into the game buoyed with news their takeover has finally been completed. AFC Bournemouth Limited is now 100% owned by Turquoise Bidco Limited, which is majority owned and controlled by William Patrick Foley II.
Newcastle come into the game on scintillating form, which could be affected by the long six week break due to the World Cup. Their last loss came at the end of August, as Liverpool scored the winner deep into injury time.
The game was originally due to be played on Wednesday (December 21) but was brought forward due to industrial action. On the clubs website, Newcastle said: “United had been set to face the Cherries at St. James’ Park a week on Wednesday but due to the planned action - which affects North East Ambulance Service, the club’s long-standing provider of ambulances, paramedics and match command - the game will now be played a day earlier on Tuesday, 20th December with kick-off set for 7:45pm.”
