Former Newcastle United transfer target Dominik Szoboszlai believes he is joining ‘a really historic club’ after completing a move to Liverpool.

As revealed by NewcastleWorld last week, the Magpies held talks with RB Leipzig over a possible deal for the Hungary international - but the Bundesliga club’s insistence on demanding Szoboszlai’s £60million release clause be paid in full ended any chance of a move to Tyneside.

However, Liverpool were willing to meet that demand just hours before the clause expired as they put the wheels in motion over a move to Anfield. Szoboszlai travelled to Merseyside on Friday after agreeing personal terms and he officially became Jurgen Klopp’s second summer signing, taking his spend to around £95million following the signing of Argentina’s World Cup winning midfielder Alexis Mac Allister last month.

Speaking after putting pen to paper at Liverpool, Szoboszlai revealed why he felt joining the Reds was the right move for a career that has already seen him establish himself as one of the most promising attacking midfielders in European football.

He told the club’s official website: “It’s really, really good. I enjoyed the last (few) days and I’m looking forward to knowing everybody better.

“The last three or four days went really long; it was not that easy. But at the end I’m here, I’m happy and I can’t wait to get started. (A) really historic club, really good players, good coach, everything is good. For me it was perfect to make the next step in a club like this. The fans, the stadium, everything is really good.”

Reds manager Klopp added: “We already have a little knowledge of Dominik as an opponent because we had a couple of really tough games against Red Bull Salzburg when he was a player there and I think everyone who saw those fixtures will have realised that even at that stage he was a really interesting prospect.”
