Nottingham Forest dealt fresh injury blow as Newcastle United and Champions League rivals watch on

Nottingham Forest are a direct rival to Newcastle United for a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Injuries are part and parcel of football - but when they happen at this point of the season, they have the power to be season-ending. As Newcastle United know from experience, with the likes of Joelinton and Lewis Hall unlikely to kick a ball again this campaign, despite being hugely influential members of Eddie Howe’s Champions League-chasing squad this season.

While the Magpies have suffered a few of their own, one of their Champions League rivals’ injury list is mounting up. Fresh from losing Callum Hudson-Odoi for the Premier League clash at Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest saw Brazilian central defender Murillo, who scored in the encounter, limp off midway through the second period.

Forest did little for their own hopes of cementing a spot in the top five, which for so long looked their own, by taking a point at Selhurst Park. Although, they can count themselves lucky in the game, coming from behind before hanging on in the closing stages, with Murillo watching from the sidelines.

With the injury so fresh, it’s impossible to know if the player, who signalled a hamstring issue before his substitution, will be out for any or all of Forest’s final three Premier League encounters - at home to Leicester City, before a trip to West Ham United, then a final day potential decider against Chelsea at the City Ground.

The player looked to be limping but did go over to applaud the travelling Forest fans post-match. That brought remarks from Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Everton defender James Tarkowski.

Carragher, watching footage of the player, said: “Can I say, I think he’s OK. That’s such a heavy limp, but he’s walked over to the fans and walked back.”

Tarkowski added: “You'd think he would be in the physio room if it was that serious.”

Carragher then said: “I can assure you Nottingham Forest fans, he will be fine for next week.”

Callum Hudson-Odoi injury

Nuno Espirito Santo has said he is unsure how long Forest will be without former Chelsea winger Hudson-Odoi.

The player suffered a hamstring problem in the 2-0 loss at Brentford last week - and was not included in the matchday squad at Selhurst Park. In fact, he was pictured in the away fans in South London.

On the injury, the head coach said: “He has a hamstring problem. He's going to be out, we're not sure how long, but not for this game and the next.”
