Newcastle United reportedly registered a late interest in the Arsenal winger.

Reiss Nelson is set to sign a new contract at Arsenal, despite reported late interest from Newcastle United.

Nelson is technically a free agent after his contract at the Emirates Stadium expired on June 30. However transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims the 23-year-old has agreed a new four-year contract.

“Reiss Nelson has signed new long term deal at Arsenal,” Romano tweeted. “Four year contract, in place since beginning of June and now sealed. Club statement to follow.

“Deal will also include option for further season. Nelson rejected bids from Italy, France and PL to stay.”

Football Transfers reported over the weekend that Newcastle had touched base with Nelson’s representatives to ask about the winger’s situation. AC Milan also showed interest.

He is, however, prepared to stay in North London, despite not starting a single Premier League match last season. In total, he made 11 appearances and scored three goals.

Nelson, who is close friends with Magpies midfielder Joe Willock, came through the academy at Arsenal before making his senior debut in 2017. He has spent time on loan at Hoffenheim and Feyenoord whilst making 66 appearances for the Gunners.

The Magpies are considering signing a wide forward this summer, although that will depend on Allan Saint-Maximin’s future. As it stands, the Frenchman is expected to stay on Tyneside.

Eddie Howe is currently prioritising other positions following the £52million arrival of Sandro Tonali. The United head coach is open to signing another central midfielder, as well as a left-back.
