Newcastle United are set to submit a bid for highly-rated Argentina Under-20 midfielder Maximo Perrone - according to reports in South America.

The 19-year-old prospect has become a regular with Velez Sarsfield this season after scoring three goals and providing two assists in 33 appearances in all competitions. That has captured the attention of Magpies scouts and one Argentinean journalist has suggested a deal is in the offing.

He took the Twitter to state: “Newcastle United comes with everything for Máximo Perrone and in the next few days they will present a formal offer.”

Perrone has opened up on his style of play and compared himself with one Barcelona and Spain star in a recent interview with Spanish outlet Marca. He said: “(Central midfield) is the position that I like the most because (in midfield) the ball passes through me a lot, I the pitch in front of me and I can reach the penalty area. I want to cover all the positions in midfield. I identify with (Sergio) Busquets.”

The Magpies are not the first club to be linked with a move for the talented defensive midfielder after Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers were both said to be interested earlier this year. If the Magpies were to make a move for Perrone, it would be another clear sign of their determination to make an impact in the South American market.

The Magpies have been linked with the likes of Brazilian quartet Angelo Gabriel, Andrey Santos, Endrick and Eguino in recent months and they are believed to be increasing their presence around the continent in a bid to capture up and coming talent to work alongside the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.

Newcastle’s bid for Perrone could be aided by one former Magpie, with Sir Bobby Robson signing Christian Bassedas currently working as Velez Sarsfield’s Sporting Director.
