Official Anthony Gordon update as Newcastle United captured arriving at Brentford

Anthony Gordon update as Newcastle United arrive at Brentford for their final match of the 2023-24 season.

Newcastle United are without Anthony Gordon for this afternoon’s final Premier League match of the campaign away to Brentford.

Gordon picked up an ankle injury during the 3-2 defeat at Manchester United on Wednesday night. Sofyan Amrabat caught the back of the winger’s left heel inside the box and his penalty appeal was controversially turned down.

Speaking after the game, Gordon said: "Really sore. I have watched it back and it is a clear penalty.

“I don't mind the referee getting it wrong on the pitch, but I don't understand the point of VAR. He [Sofyan Amrabat] goes down my Achilles and pushes me in the back.

"I knew straight away, that is why I didn't appeal. I waited for the VAR to check, I told my teammates 'it was a clear penalty'. I don't understand the point of it, either get rid of it or get better - it's that simple. I think I am quite fond of it. Fond of the idea and it should work, but there are too many mistakes."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe then cast doubt over Gordon’s fitness when asked for an update on Friday. The former Everton man wasn’t spotted arriving with the team at the Gtech Stadium.

He told NewcastleWorld: “We’ll wait and see yeah. I’m not 100% sure as I sit here how he is. We’ll see how he is today. But yeah, certainly that tackle left a mark on him.”

Gordon misses only his third game of the campaign, and his first through injury. The 23-year-old was recently crowed Newcastle’s Player of the Season with 12 goals and 11 assists to his name this term.
