AC Milan are set to sign a central defender as Newcastle United continue to be linked with Malick Thiaw.

As per Gazzetta dello Sport, Red Bull Salzburg centre-back Strahinja Pavlovic has agreed personal terms over a move to the San Siro. A transfer fee is still being discussed but a deal is expected to happen for around £17million.

And that could have a knock-on effect on Newcastle and their reported pursuit of Thiaw. The same publication adds that “Pavlovic risks overshadowing Thiaw”.

United are in the market for another centre-back this summer following Lloyd Kelly’s arrival on a free transfer from AFC Bournemouth. Both Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are sidelined until later this year with ACL injuries, leaving the defence light on senior bodies.

Kelly offers cover on the left-hand side while Fabian Schar is the only recognised option on the right. Thiaw is said to have been identified as someone who can rival the 32-year-old Switzerland international.

The 22-year-old has made 54 appearances for Milan since joining from Schalke 04 two years ago. He appeared in last season’s goalless Champions League draw against Newcastle at the San Siro but missed the reverse fixture with a hamstring injury.

Gazzetta dello Sport further states that “the feeling is” Thiaw will move to St James’ Park, despite Milan demanding at £33m.

It was only 12 months ago since Newcastle and Milan last did business when Sandro Tonali arrived on Tyneside for a £55m

The Italian midfielder played 12 times before receiving a 10-month ban for illegal betting offences. He is eligible to return in late August for the Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur.
