Federico Fernandez has bid an emotional farewell to Newcastle United after completing a deadline day move to Elche.
The Argentine defender made 89 appearances in four years on Tyneside following his arrival from Swansea City in 2018.

Fernandez was a popular figure behind the scenes at Newcastle, although was restricted to making just two appearances under Eddie Howe due to injury.
Having slipped down the pecking order after Dan Burn and Sven Botman’s signing, the 33-year-old opted for a switch to Spain.
“It’s been a pleasure to wear the Newcastle colours,” Fernandez posted on Instagram. “I had a great time at the club.

“To the players and staff the best of luck for the season ahead.”
Following his departure, Howe was keen to pay tribute to the former Napoli defender.
“What an incredible professional, great guy,” the Magpies head coach said. “I can’t speak highly enough of him and his contribution to the football club over many years.

“Unfortunately for us, he picked up a couple of injuries so we didn’t get to see a lot of him on the pitch but behind the scenes, he’s been incredible for us and he goes with our best wishes.”
