Positive injury update after Newcastle United midfielder suffered concerning ‘relapse’

Hamilton Academical hope to have Lucas De Bolle back in action “pretty soon” following a two-month battle with a concussion. The Newcastle United midfielder suffered the blow in August, which has limited his playing time in Scotland.

The 20-year-old was still recovering from a concussion - picked up in a under-21s game - when he joined the Scottish Championship club on summer transfer deadline day. He made his debut against Queen’s Park in mid-September but hasn’t featured since after experiencing a recurrence of blurred vision.

Accies boss Jon Rankin has full sympathy for De Bolle, who is aiming to catch the eye during his first senior loan spell, and hopes the Scotland youth international is over the worst and is on the road to returning very soon.

Rankin said: “Lucas has been able to go on a bike this week. His blurred vision has disappeared, his CT scan has come back all clear but he has been out for a period of time. Hopefully at some point today we will see him do some running or light jogging on the pitch and if we get clarity with that, we can step up his process of getting back.

“He’s a fit boy and I’m sure if we can get him back on the training pitch, then I’m sure he will be available pretty soon after that to be involved in games.”
