Newcastle United recently locked in one of their star players as talks over a new contract came to fruition. Bruno Guimarães put pen to paper last week and agreed a five-year deal with the club, committing his future until 2028.

Since joining the Magpies last year, the Brazilian has established himself as an important asset to the team under Eddie Howe. Last season, Guimarães missed only six matches in the Premier League due to injury, and started the rest, notching nine goalscoring contributions throughout the season despite predominantly being a defensive midfielder.

While his performances have seriously impressed those around him and watching from afar, his market value has shot up as well. Just before his move to St James’ Park, Guimarães was rated €30 million (£25.7m) by Transfermarkt and he has since skyrocketed up to €85 million (£73m). It’s no surprise that Newcastle attached a reported £100 million release clause to his new contract.

Although, a recent report from SPORT has claimed that despite the nine-figure set fee, there is a small exception in his terms. A ‘secret clause’ in his contract allows the midfielder to join Barcelona for a significantly reduced price, if the club came knocking. Like most players, Barca is one of Guimarães’ dream clubs, and this loophole reportedly slashes his release clause to around €65-70 million (£55-60m) for the La Liga giants only.

However, in the wake of this report, another has emerged to debunk this apparent ‘secret clause.’ An exclusive from FootballTransfers has revealed that in fact, no such clause exists in Guimarães’ new terms with Newcastle. There has been a lot of interest in the Brazil international over recent months but no club will be given the upper-hand when it comes to approaching to sign him, according to the new update.

Guimarães has started every single Premier League match for the Magpies so far this season and has contributed a goal and an assist. Newcastle headed into the international break sitting eighth in the table but not too far afloat from the top four by any stretch. Their mission is certainly to continue their fight for European football, following on from their stellar 2022/23 season.
