Newcastle United are linked with a £25million move for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Former Everton and Aston Villa CEO Keith Wyness believes Dominic Calvert-Lewin would be “perfect” for Newcastle United.

The Magpies are linked with a £25million move for the Everton striker this summer. Calvert-Lewin bagged eight goals across all competitions last season to help Sean Dyche’s side stay up despite two points deductions.

The England international rekindled some of his best form following two lean years at Goodison Park. Reports now claim Newcastle are interested in Calvert-Lewin as competition for Alexander Isak this summer.

Callum Wilson’s four-year spell at St James’ Park could be coming to an end after another injury-hit campaign. Isak has also suffered niggling setbacks - putting a striker near the top of Eddie Howe’s wish list.

And ex-Toffees supremo Wyness has urged Newcastle to sign Calvert Lewin, calling him a “fantastic” striker when fit. The reported £25million transfer fee may prove an obstacle for Toon chiefs, who know he could be available for nothing next year.

He told Football Insider: “I think he’d be a perfect Newcastle number nine, to be honest. He leads the line very well, he’s got an eye for goal and, when he’s fit, he’s fantastic.

“He leads the line very well, he’s got an eye for goal – and when he’s fit, he’s fantastic. But I think Calvert-Lewin is in the mould of the great Newcastle strikers. I’d hate to see him leave Everton. I certainly hope he stays, but Everton have their own constraint in terms of what they can offer in a new contract.”
