Former Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton winger Andros Townsend has signed a long-term contract with Luton Town.

After failing to win a contract at Burnley in the summer, The Hatters offered the 32-year-old a Premier League lifeline in October. His deal was due to expire this month but Luton have announced Townsend has extended his stay.

“Obviously I’m delighted; three months ago I thought my career was over," said Townsend. "So from going to begging around the world just for a trial to being offered a longer contract is a dream come true.

“It’s a special, special football club. I think we can really achieve something special this season. It’s only half-way done, we’ve got six months – 19 games – to pull off the unthinkable.”

Prior to moving to Kenilworth Road, the 13-capped England international hadn't kicked a competitive ball for over a year after sustaining an ACL injury at Everton. But Townsend has impressed by marking his 11 Premier League appearances with two assists and a goal - against former club Newcastle just before Christmas.

“It’s an amazing signing for us," Hatters boss Rob Edwards added. "Andros has come into the group with real humility and professionalism. He’s shown the whole group what it means to be elite and a top-end pro.

“His fitness levels have been insane, and he’s shown more and more his qualities with every game.

“For us to be able to tie him down to a longer-term contract is a credit to him – he’s been through a tough time, and it says a lot about him as a person.

“I also think it says a lot about the ambitions of this football club that we’re signing people like Andros, with his level and quality, so it’s a big, big signing for us.”

Townsend started his career at Tottenham and made 93 appearances before making the switch to Newcastle in January 2016 for £12million.

Whilst he impressed at St James’ Park - scoring four times in 13 games - his stay was shortlived after he opted to join Crystal Palace following United’s relegation from the Premier League.

Townsend was close to returning to Tyneside six months later but then Magpies owner Mike Ashley refused to sanction the deal. Townsend spent five years at Selhurst Park and was just 15 appearances shy of reaching 200.

The player then reunited with former boss Rafa Benitez in 2021 after becoming a free agent. He appeared 27 times before his career at Goodison Park was cut short because of a knee injury.
