Newcastle United reportedly made a late approach for the Arsenal winger.

Arsenal have confirmed Reiss Nelson has signed a new long-term contract amid reported late interest from Newcastle United.

Nelson’s previous contract at the Emirates expired on June 30, which, as claimed by Football Transfers, saw the Magpies contact the winger’s representatives.

The 23-year-old, however, has opted to stay in North London, despite not starting a single Premier League match last season. In total, he made 11 appearances and scored three goals.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said: “Reiss is a player I have admired since the first day I was here. He has tremendous ability and is such an exciting offensive talent. Reiss knows how important he is to our squad with the quality he has.

“It’s great that Reiss has committed his future to us - he knows this club so well, he grew up here and we look forward to enjoying many more good moments with him.”

Sporting director Edu added: “Reiss is still only 23 years old but has already made a significant contribution to Arsenal for many years. He has gained good experience on loan, has come back and showed just how valuable he is to us.

“We are so happy to agree a new deal with Reiss, and we are proud that he is another young player who has developed through our Academy into our first team.”

Nelson, who is close friends with Magpies midfielder Joe Willock, joined Arsenal’s academy aged eight before making his senior debut in 2017. He has spent time on loan at Hoffenheim and Feyenoord whilst making 66 appearances for the Gunners.

Alternatively, Newcastle have been credited with further interest in Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes.
