Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed the arrival of former Chelsea striker Diego Costa on a free transfer.

Bruno Lage’s side fought hard to sign the 33-year-old after his work permit request was originally rejected by the UK Home Office.

However, their appeal was successful and Costa, a free agent after leaving Atletico Mineiro in January, was free to complete his return to the Premier League last week.

Wolves had held off from announcing the former Spain international’s signing following the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday.

The Midlands club’s social media fell silent over the weekend before Costa was announced on Monday morning.

Similarly, Newcastle United have also delayed confirming the arrival of former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius out of respect for the Queen’s passing.

The 29-year-old underwent his Magpies medical on Thursday and was registered in time to be named in the club’s 25-man Premier League squad.

Karius replaces Karl Darlow as back-up to Nick Pope after the former Nottingham Forest man injured his ankle in training that is set to keep him sidelined for a few months.

With Wolves feeling it is now an appropriate time to unveil Costa, that may encourage the Magpies to do the same with Karius.

The EFL has confirmed its midweek fixtures will take place as planned, while the SPFL has revealed fixtures will resume this weekend.

Eddie Howe’s side are set to face Bournemouth at St James’ Park on Saturday, although the Premier League are still to confirm whether that game will go ahead.

Newcastle said last week a decision “will be made in consultation with the Premier League next week.”
