Darren England has been confirmed as the referee for Newcastle United’s trip to Crystal Palace this weekend.

The Magpies face London opposition for the second time this week after losing to West Ham United on Monday. Victory would have propelled Newcastle to sixth but a laborious performance left Eddie Howe’s men in mid-table.

St James’ Park fell flat and the Magpies must make amends on the road with a trip to the capital on Saturday. As for the opposition, Palace have endured a rotten start to the season, with just one win from 12 games piling pressure on Oliver Glasner.

Losing star asset Michael Olise and speculation regarding Marc Guehi’s future has unsettled the Eagles in 2024-25. Newcastle tried - and failed - to sign the England international over the summer.

Reports have suggested the Magpies could try again in January as Guehi enters the final 18 months of his contract. Palace chairman Steve Parish previously demanded “superstar money” for the defender.

Only a fool could confidently predict what will happen when Newcastle travel to Selhurst Park. However, one thing for certain is that Premier League official England will be the man in the middle.

The 38-year-old was promoted to top-flight referee in 2020 and most recently refereed Newcastle for the 1-1 home draw with Brighton last season. A memorable fixture Toon fans may remember is the 2-0 triumph over Arsenal in May 2022.

Ben White’s own goal and a Bruno Guimaraes strike down the Gunners in front of a raucous Tyneside crowd. Palace welcome Newcastle to Selhurst Park at 3pm on Saturday, with the visitors looking to avenge April’s dismal 2-0 defeat.
