Manchester City are tempted to trigger Bruno Guimaraes’ £100million release clause this summer, according to reports.

Noises about the Brazilian’s future have rumbled in the background since he signed his contract extension last October. Penning a new deal usually quashes transfer talk but the reported release clause has fuelled speculation.

While Newcastle United have underwhelmed this season, Guimaraes’ performances have remained impressive in an injury-stricken midfield. He has provided the glue for an engine room that has been without Joe Willock, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali throughout the campaign due to injury and suspension.

But missing out on European football could make up the 26-year-old’s mind for him. Speaking after last month’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, Guimaraes, who bagged a brace, opened up about his Toon future.

“Sometimes people speak a lot about me,” he said. “I just speak a lot about football. I’m very happy here, and I like how the fans think of me here. I enjoy my time here a lot. I have never felt so loved.

“The fans have been unbelievable with me and my family. When I get the shirt I try to play for them. I don’t know (how long I’ll be here), but I hope this can keep going for much longer. We have to get Europe again. Try for Champions League, I know it's difficult but definitely for Europa League.”

A report from FootballTransfers has now claimed Man City are keeping tabs on his situation. Pep Guardiola has backed Premier League-proven players in recent windows, with Matheus Nunes and Mateo Kovacic arriving at the Etihad.

Guimaraes would face further stiff competition from Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva should he join City. The report also names Guimaraes’ long-term friend, Lucas Paqueta, as another Guardiola target.
