Kieran Tierney is closing in on a season-long loan move to Real Sociedad after Newcastle United were ruled out as a potential destination.

After making just six Premier League starts last season, Tierney has fallen further down the pecking order having been left out of Arsenal’s matchday squad for their two opening matches against Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace.

The Magpies had shown a strong interest in the Scotland left-back this summer but that came to an end when they completed the signing of 18-year-old Lewis Hall from Chelsea earlier this week.

With a switch to St James’ Park no longer a possibility, the 26-year-old is expected to move to La Liga side Real Sociedad. As per David Ornstein, the deal does not include an option or obligation to buy but the Spanish club are paying a loan fee and covering the player’s salary in full.

Speaking about his future last month, Tierney said: “It’s not really up to me. I’ve not had any discussions with the manager and I’m just working hard every day and trying to do as well as I can. I didn’t miss a single game because of injury last season.

“I was available for every match and always ready when called upon. I think everyone would agree that I never give less than 100 percent, whether I’m playing or not.

“You can’t play every single game every year and I don’t expect that. But I still made a lot of appearances last season coming off the bench, whether that was to see games out or help to get a goal, and I did all I could to help.”

Sociedad, who will compete in the Champions League this term, are 13th in La Liga table after two draws from their opening two fixtures. If completed in time, the former Celtic star could make his debut against Granada next Saturday.
