Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has playfully suggested Fabian Schar’s red card against Southampton could see Crystal Palace raise their asking price for Marc Guehi.

The Magpies made a winning start to the the new Premier League season through Joelinton’s goal in the 45th minute. That was despite Eddie Howe’s men being reduced to 10 men a quarter-of-an-hour earlier after Schar was adjudged to have headbutted Ben Brereton Diaz.

Unless United launch an appeal and successfully get the decision overturned, Schar will miss the next three games against AFC Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League and Nottingham Forest in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

It leaves Newcastle without a recognised right-sided centre-back, increasing the need to sign one. Guehi is the main target but Shearer believes Palace could now bump his asking price.

Howe’s side have lodged four bids for the England international, the latest understood be worth £65million including add-ons.

Shearer told Match of the Day: “They [Newcastle] can’t have too many complaints about it. When you know the laws, you know if you put your head into someone you run the risk of a red card. He [Schar] just takes the bait completely, doesn’t he? It’s embarrassing what Brereton Diaz does and the way he reacts, not nice to see.

“But what I would say is that they’re both put their heads in together, it’s just the way he goes down. It’s a red card, I’m not going to complain about that, he deserves it. If anything, it’ll probably put another £5m on the [Marc] Guehi fee if they’re going to try and get him because he [Schar] misses the next three games!”

Meanwhile, Shearer hailed Joelinton as “one of the best players in the Premier League” for his display against Southampton.

“He is just a tower and strength in midfield,” said Shearer. “The turnaround from this player is incredible. Everything about him is class, he’s one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. He’s a giant of a midfielder. He never shies away from wanting the ball even in really difficult positions.

“When you’re under the cosh you need someone to stand up. He was absolutely magnificent. Everything Newcastle had to do in that second-half he played a huge part in it.”
