£25m former Celtic hero 'prefers' Tottenham move over Newcastle United as Man Utd eye defender

Newcastle United are reportedly set to miss out on one January target as the Magpies look to boost their attacking ranks.

There were claims suggesting Magpies manager Eddie Howe would be keen to secure a loan deal for the Portuguese winger as he struggles to make an impact following a big money move to Saudi Pro League squad Al-Ittihad.

Jota enjoyed a highly successful spell with Celtic after scoring 28 goals and providing 26 assists in 83 appearances as the Glasgow giants completed league and cup double during his first season at Celtic Park before going one better with a treble last season.

A £25m move to Al-Ittihad has failed to pay off as Jota has made just two starts for his new club and that has led to links with a move to Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur. The presence of his former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou is said to have tipped the battle to sign the winger in favour of the North London club and Saudi outlet So3ody Sports have claimed Jota will snub a potential move to Newcastle to secure a reunion with the Australian boss.

Magpies monitor Man Utd target

Newcastle are ready to challenge Premier League rivals Manchester United for the signing of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo.

The Mirror have claimed the Magpies have scouted the France international during the season and have suggested Eddie Howe 'intends' to bring in a centre-back during the January transfer market.

However, the main competition for Todibo will come from the 13-time Premier League champions, who are expected to make a move for the defender in a move that could raise a few eyebrows as Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to take a 25% stake at Old Trafford.

Todibo is not the only defender capturing the attention of the two Uniteds after they were both linked with a move for Everton and England Under-21 star Jarrad Branthwaite and Sporting CP's Portugal international Goncalo Inacio.
