Newcastle United will have Dan Burn back from suspension for Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace - but two players still remain at risk.

Burn picked up his fifth Premier League yellow card of the season in the 3-1 at Nottingham Forest, which forced him to miss the 2-0 defeat at home to West Ham United on Monday night.

Any player who receives five cautions in the opening 19 league fixtures is handed an automatic one-match suspension. After the game, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe admitted Burn’s absence was a blow after Lloyd Kelly failed to grasp his opportunity.

“Yeah he was a big miss,” said Howe. “You see the first goal and I think Dan’s presence helps us in those situations for sure. His leadership qualities on the pitch can’t be underestimated, he’s an organiser and a really good communicator with his backline and midfield. Certainly my initial assessment is that we missed him.”

Meanwhile, Joelinton and Fabian Schar continue to walk a disciplinary tightrope as they too are just one yellow card away from a ban.

Schar and Joelinton must avoid any punishment until matchday 20 - the visit to Tottenham Hotspur on January 2, 2025 - in order to avoid suspension. Should either player be booked against Palace, they will the St James’ Park clash against Liverpool four days later.

Elsewhere across the squad, Lewis Hall and Sandro Tonali are also close to the threshold having been booked three times this season. Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff and Kelly sit on two yellows, while Jacob Murphy, Joe Willock and Nick Pope are on one.

After the 19-game mark, the threshold changes to 10 bookings, 32 games and a two-match ban. Any player shown 15 bookings over the course of the season is handed a three-match ban but no player has ever been cautioned that many times during a single Premier League campaign.
