Newcastle United's Premier League squad is set to be two players short of the 25-man limit when confirmed later this month.
All 20 top-flight clubs must submit their squad list to the Premier League following at the end of both the summer and winter transfer windows. But when the market is open, clubs are permitted to play any contracted player.
United named a squad of 25 for the first-half of the season but two will drop out.
Javier Manquillo left to join Celta Vigo after six-and-a-half-years on Tyneside while £52million summer signing Sandro Tonali is banned from football until August following an investigation into illegal betting activity.
Eddie Howe could feasibly keep Tonali in the squad but it'd make little difference with the head coach unable to play him.
Each Premier League squad list can include up to 25 players made up of at least eight ‘homegrown’ players. Players born on or after January 1, 2002 do not need to be included in the 25-man squad, which benefits the likes of Tino Livramento, Lewis Miley, Lewis Hall, Elliot Anderson and Joe White.
Any academy player such as Alex Murphy, Ben Parkinson, Michael Ndiweni, Amadou Diallo and latest signing Alfie Harrison also don't need to be included to be eligible to play in the Premier League.
