Released Newcastle United midfielder spotted in Dortmund for Champions League clash - fan gallery

Thousands of Newcastle United fans gathered at Dortmund’s Alter Markt ahead of last night's Champions League defeat - including a familiar face.

Former Magpies midfielder Matty Longstaff was spotted in the crowd supporting his boyhood team and his brother Sean.

The 23-year-old famously scored on his Premier League debut against Manchester United in 2019 before being released by the club in the summer having made 20 senior appearances.

Despite his release, Longstaff has remained with United whilst he completes his rehab from the ACL injury that he sustained on Boxing Day during a loan spell at Colchester United.

While it is believed around 20,000 Newcastle fans travelled to Dortmund to soak up the atmosphere, only a limited number of supporters got tickets for the game.

And unfortunately for United, it ended in defeat after goals fro Niclas Fullkurg and Julian Brandt.

It leaves Eddie Howe's side with a mountain to climb in Group F as they'll likely need to beat both Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan in their remaining fixtures.

Nevertheless, the Toon Army were in party mode on German soil. Check our fan gallery in our NewcastleWorld’s fan gallery, including photos of Longstaff and other former Newcastle players.
