Serie A club Roma are reportedly considering offering Loris Karius a route out of Newcastle United after the experienced goalkeeper revealed he was keen on a move to Italy.

The former Liverpool and Mainz stopper was an emergency signing by Magpies manager midway through last season after Nick Pope and Karl Darlow both suffered injuries and Martin Dubvravka was allowed to join Premier League rivals Manchester United on what would be an unsuccessful loan spell.

Karius made a surprise debut in the Carabao Cup Final defeat against the Red Devils following Pope’s dismissal in a Premier League loss to Liverpool just a week earlier and has gone on to make just one more appearance after starting the recent 4-1 reverse at Arsenal. Karius will be out of contract at the end of the season and seems unlikely to be offered a new deal at this point in time. As he considers his next step, RomaLive has revealed Roma are ready to offer a deal to the German stopper and give him a chance to replace former Wolves keeper Rui Patricio as competition for the highly-rated Mile Svilar.

Karius is described as ‘not a priority name’ for Roma but will be considered as a free transfer ‘solution’ over the summer transfer window. The report comes just days after Karius revealed he was ‘intrigued’ by life in Serie A and stressed his determination to challenge for a number one spot after spending the majority of his time at Newcastle acting as backup to Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka.

He told Gazetta dello Sport: “Of course, it would be a great solution if there were good options for me, regardless of proximity to my family. I have always followed Serie A and it intrigues me a lot, but it is too early to talk about the future. Claudio (Marchisio) and I are friends, I know him well and I think he is the right person. I want to go back to being number one like I always have been except for the last two years. When I play I do well and I know I have enough quality to perform at the highest levels again. When I arrived, they already had a starting goalkeeper, and it wasn’t easy for me. I definitely aim to play more and that’s why I train hard every day. Being a goalkeeper is very difficult, the challenge is to stay positive knowing that you are not playing and to be ready.”
