Bruno Guimaraes had mixed emotions after Newcastle United’s 3-1 Carabao Cup win over Brentford.

The Magpies booked their place in the semi-finals of the competition for the second time in three seasons via a Sandro Tonali brace and a goal from Fabian Schar. Indeed, it was Guimaraes who set up the latter’s goal in the 69th minute.

Eddie Howe’s side will discover their semi-final opponents following the conclusion of Tottenham Hotspur versus Manchester United tonight. Also in the hat are Arsenal and Liverpool.

The first leg of the two-legged semi-final will take place on the week commencing January 6 but unfortunately for Guimaraes, he is unable to feature.

As per EFL rules, any player booked twice in the competition before the semi-final stage is handed a one-match competition ban. Guimaraes’ yellow card in the first-half followed on from his caution in the second round penalty shootout win at Nottingham Forest.

Writing on social after the game, the Brazilian wrote: “Very happy to be in another semi-final with this club. The second in three years, and we want more. Happy for another assist and for the team’s performance.

“On the other hand, sad to be suspended for the first leg of the semi-final. We move forward together in pursuit of our goals.”

Newcastle will also be without Fabian Schar for the same reason. But before the first leg, Howe’s side have Ipswich Town, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Tottenham to play in the Premier League.
