Football financial expert Stefan Borson believes Newcastle United must add one “top player” to their squad this summer.

As it stands, the Magpies are in pole position to secure Champions League football. That is despite suffering a brutal setback by losing 4-1 to Aston Villa on Saturday.

While Newcastle sit third, just two points separate them and Villa in sixth - making the Champions League race one of the tightest in recent memory. Returning to UEFA’s top table will give the Magpies pulling power in the transfer market and help keep potential suitors at bay for the likes of Alexander Isak.

PSR regulations have hampered PIF’s ability to spend, with no significant incomings for three windows. However, getting over the line will provide extra cash to bankroll fresh additions.

Monetary guru Borson - a former advisor at Manchester City - has suggested Newcastle have “six top players” and need another to compete both domestically and in Europe. He told Football Insider: “I think it will be interesting to see the sort of headline signings that Newcastle can make if they get the Champions League and how they bolster that first team, that core of their top players.

“They have now got maybe six really top players and they could add another really top player to that group as they really start to compete again. How much do you need to build the squad out for all those extra games if they’re in the Champions League or even if they’re in the Europa League, which looks very likely.

“Of course, they won the Carabao Cup, so they are in Europe next season. They have definitely got lots of games to deal with and that’s the big contrast to this season. They are going to have to buy some players.”

Darren Eales ‘excited’ about Newcastle United’s summer plans

Toon CEO Darren Eales hinted earlier this year that the January outgoings could help Newcastle have an “exciting” summer. The Magpies sold Miguel Almiron and agreed a loan deal for Lloyd Kelly, expected to become permanent at the end of the season.

"We’re pleased with the business we did in January in terms of our transfer outgoings,” Eales said. “Being quite open, that’s something in the past that’s been challenging for us in terms of making those player transfers out.

“That was good for us in terms of that window. Paul Mitchell and his team have had a period of time now working with Eddie Howe as well because, ultimately, it’s about getting the players that Eddie wants in his position so there’s real alignment in that respect so we’re excited about the summer ahead."
