Spanish media outlets are tearing into Antonio Cordero for choosing Newcastle United as his expected move inches closer.

As reported earlier this week, the 18-year-old is set to snub interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona to become the latest Magpies wonderkid. Youth investment has been a key priority at St James’ Park since the Saudi-backed takeover in October 2021.

The likes of Yankuba Minteh were poached from relative obscurity before being sold at a profit to help comply with PSR regulations. However, the main aim is to sign players who can eventually compete in Eddie Howe’s first team.

Cordero is understood to have visited Tyneside earlier this year before committing his long-term future to Newcastle. Despite Malaga struggling in La Liga 2, the youngster has 11 goal contributions and, although not yet officially announced, is set to join the Magpies when his contract expires in July.

Malaga are thought to be furious at losing one of their prized assets - a Spain under-19 international - for nothing. News leaking over the weekend blindsided the club as they believed Cordero could still be convinced to stay.

Local outlet Diario Sur labelled Cordero a “snake” for turning his back on Los Boquerones. Further accusations relating to money - and what Newcastle offered - were levelled at the winger.

National publication Marca also claim Cordero’s wage packet will increase significantly on Tyneside. En Cancha take aim at Newcastle’s ownership, with “petrodollars” the reason behind the move.

They questioned why the young Spaniard chose United and not Real Madrid or Barcelona - two domestic heavyweights understood to be expressing interest. Malaga still have seven games remaining of the 2024-25 campaign, travelling to Eibar on Monday.

Their next home fixture is to Castellon on April 27 and close attention should be paid to the reaction Cordero receives. If fans are as hostile as the media, the prodigy may not want to get to St James’ Park quick enough.

Jason Tindall was asked about Antonito Cordero to Newcastle United deal

Stand-in Toon boss Jason Tindall was asked directly about the Cordero rumours ahead of tonight’s game with Crystal Palace. While choosing to stay coy, he did discuss the club’s transfer plans at youth level.

“I know the club is scouring Europe to try and find some of the best talent that's out there,” Tindall told reporters. “I'm sure as soon as we have any more updates or news on that then you guys will be the first to hear about it.”
