A new signing section could return to St James’ Park after Newcastle United fans were consulted at a club event.

Supporters were asked at random to attend a workshop that aims to sample opinions about how the atmosphere and match-day experience can improve at Newcastle. This comes on the back of frustration following the Saudi-backed takeover.

Tickets have been like hen’s teeth for those unlucky enough not to own a season ticket at St James’ Park. Memberships, the most accessible way to attend matches for non-season ticket holders, were previously capped but are now on sale throughout the campaign.

All tickets were made digital and distributed via a ballot system rather than an online queue. This has led to frustration that the atmosphere - renowned as one of the most fervent in England - inside the stadium has taken a hit.

The introduction of safe standing for home supporters at the start of the season was expected to raise decibel levels. However, this was installed in the Gallowgate End’s Strawberry Corner - a section of the ground that already made their voices heard.

Previously, Level 7 Leazes Corner - next to away supporters - was a vocal part of the ground during the late 2000s and early 2010s. Shortly before leaving in 2008, former Mike Ashley right-hand man Chris Mort set up the “singing section” - and fans have called for its return.

Other ideas pitched include an improved PA system, cheaper drinks, self-serving machines and half-time entertainment to return. Here is a round-up of what fans put forward, courtesy of the Newcastle United Supporters Trust:

- Better PA System usage/upgrade.

- Music selection needs updating. Club potentially to survey fans on which songs are preferred. Allow organic fan singing after match ends.

- Most in favour of bringing back half-time entertainment. The zorbs racing of Wonga days mentioned. Suggested Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Jamie Reuben to be the first contestants!

- Cheaper drinks/food options right up to kick-off.

- Overall agreement of extending the safe standing in the ground. Popular areas were level 7 next to away fans, Leazes and Gallowgate. Could be tied in to be a singing section.

- Queues at half-time need to be tackled. Suggested mobile drink stations for bottles to ease the pressure of queues.
