The first month of the Premier League season is over and Newcastle United have shown some positive signs of the direction they are taking under Eddie Howe.

A near perfect opening day performance saw Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson net in a 2-0 home win against Nottingham Forest before United showed the other side of their game as they battled to a goalless draw at Brighton and Hove Albion.

A fine display in an eventful 3-3 draw with Manchester City and a wonder strike from Allan Saint-Maximin earned a draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers and continued the unbeaten start before a controversial late defeat at Liverpool put a first black mark on the record.

There was more controversy in the recent goalless draw with Crystal Palace as a bizarre VAR decision ruled out a Tyrick Mitchell own goal that would have given the Magpies their second win of the season, despite the Eagles full-back pushing United star Joe Willock before diverting the ball into his own net.

News is awaited on whether Saturday’s home game with Bournemouth will take place - but the unexpected pause in the season gives us a chance to look back and assess what has already happened in the opening weeks of the campaign.

NewcastleWorld utilises stats experts WhoScored to look at who the Magpies star performers were throughout the first month of the season.
