Supporters urge Newcastle United to ‘be bold’ with mammoth bid for Euro 2024 breakout star

Newcastle United supporters are demanding Toon chiefs sign Giorgi Mamardashvili this summer.

It is no secret that the Magpies are targeting a new goalkeeper to push Nick Pope for his No.1 spot. The England international missed most of last season through injury and returned on the final day of the campaign.

Loris Karius will leave once his contract expires on June 30 and Newcastle are also open to offers for Martin Dubravka, with Celtic interested. Eddie Howe wants a new shot-stopper to challenge Pope, who has been the undisputed first-choice since arriving two years ago.

Reports linked Valencia goalie Mamardashvili with a potential £35million move ahead of Euro 2024. That was before the Georgian emerged as the tournament’s standout keeper from the group stages.

The 23-year-old has made the most saves (20) in Germany and pulled off arguably the best of the tournament against Portugal. Georgia qualified for the knockout stages at their first-ever major tournament - with Mamardashvili grabbing the plaudits.

Newcastle fans have taken to social media in recent days to urge the St James’ Park hierarchy into a “bold” deal. One post read: “€35million is a more than reasonable fee considering Kepa and Onana cost north of £50million. Be bold Newcastle. A ready-made No.1 there for the taking.”

Another was left stunned by Mamardashvili’s save to deny Diogo Dalot from distance. The fan posted: “Save of the tournament so far. It'll be a huge mistake if we don't push the boat out and try to sign Mamardashvili for £35million. 

“That's only £15million more than Trafford. In a season or two his value will be double that, easy.”
