Steven Taylor sent Newcastle United supporters into meltdown on social media after being announced as Al-Quabila manager.

Fans were puzzled when footage emerged of Taylor, dressed in an all-black suit, was given chauffeur-driven treatment and announced as the club’s new boss. A tense social media clip by Soheil Varahram, the owner, had fans in suspense, hinting at a coach with “ a mentality on a different level” and someone who operated “at the highest level of football” before unveiling Taylor.

Varahram’s ambitious project aims to “build a football club in 365 days” and they will compete in the UAE Pro League next season. He will also play for Al-Quabila, having recently represented Dubai Irish.

Taylor, introduced as a “Newcastle United legend”, was confirmed as the club’s first-ever manager. In the video, he replied: “Guys, it's great to be part of the tribe. Let's take over.”

Bemused Toon fans were left perplexed online following the announcement. One joked: “Steven Taylor in one of the best managerial unveilings of all time. Wonderful stuff.”

Another supporter was also stunned after being fooled by the exaggerated promotional video. He wrote: “Could've sat and guessed for days but never would Steven Taylor have come to mind.”

However, for those paying attention in the Middle East, Taylor’s appointment may not come as a surprise. The 38-year-old coached Dubai outfit Gulf United to back-to-back promotions and now gets a chance to make his mark in the top flight. Ex-Swansea City and Aston Villa defender Neil Taylor took over from the former Newcastle star last year.
